Benefits of loose leaf tea and fresh coffee go beyond taste

Let’s start by saying we serve loose tea and fresh coffee and for us it goes past making a great cup of coffee or tea.  It’s about giving our customers (you) the very best and also being responsible for the environment.  Fresh coffee and loose tea has less packaging therefore less waste and that's just better for everyone and the planet.

Everyone has seen or used coffee pods to brew coffee and tea before.  Did you know that Germany's second largest city Hamburg has now banned the use of these little pods for the tons of waste they contribute to…

Here in North America one of the leading companies Keurig has come forward having a goal by 2020 to go to 100% environmentally friendly packaging.  (a long time in our opinion) specially considering local companies like Kienna in Calgary have already developed a system to go green already.   But for now we would like the solution to be to  stop using these little cups that are filling our land fill and go green.  But be forewarned there is a side effect of not using them… it may just lead to fresher tea and coffee with better taste if you can deal with that.

Here at Chill Out Café and Bakery we want you to have the very best in freshness and taste and our beverages that complement our fresh food and baked goods should not be an exception.  Why not come downtown Red Deer this week and try out delicious meals and have a coffee or tea that complements your food choice from our wide range of choices as well.

How Can Delicious Foods Be Healthy Foods?

How Can Delicious Foods Be Healthy Foods?

Reasons to start eating less processed foods

The more people learn about the foods we are eating and nutrition the more it seems we hear about eating the way people did a hundred years ago. All the research we have read in the past few years has pointed us in the direction that "whole foods" – is the best foods for you.  I a restaurant we have to make things interesting and tasty on a daily basis so to go to a menu of 100% whole foods does not make a lot of business sense yet… But cooking with whole foods staying away from additives, preservatives and coloring is very easy and healthy to do.

This could mean eating:

·        Whole grains instead of refined grains whenever possible.

·        Fruits, vegetables, and beans instead of supplements and additives to provide the fiber and vitamins they contain.

·        A whole chicken breasts and legs cooked with healthful ingredients instead of processed chicken found in frozen nuggets processed with added fats, flavorings, and preservatives.

·        Ingredients lists you can read and understand then a list of things you can hardly pronounce.

·        Fresh berries instead of frozen with muffins. Or worse toaster pastries and breakfast bars, yuck!

So the next time you think tasty can’t be delicious and sweets cannot be healthy think about the ingredients that are going into these foods because only you can make healthy choices!

Health Benefits of Tea by Tea Squared

Health Benefits of Tea by Tea Squared

Regarded for thousands of years in the East as a key to good health, happiness, and wisdom, tea has caught the attention of researchers in the West, who are discovering the many health benefits of different types of teas.

Tea is a name given to a lot of brews, but purists consider only green tea, black tea, white tea, oolong tea, and pu-erh tea the real thing. They are all derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, a shrub native to China and India, and contain unique antioxidants called flavonoids. The most potent of these, known as ECGC, may help against free radicals that can contribute to cancer, heart disease, and clogged arteries.

All these teas also have caffeine and theanine, which affect the brain and seem to heighten mental alertness.

The more processed the tea leaves, usually the less polyphenol content. Polyphenols include flavonoids. Oolong and black teas are oxidized or fermented, so they have lower concentrations of polyphenols than green tea; but their antioxidizing power is still high.

Tea contains a large number of potentially bioactive chemicals, including flavonoids, amino acids, vitamins, caffeine and several polysacharides, and a variety of health effects have been proposed and investigated. It has been suggested that green and black tea may protect against cancer, though the catechins found in green tea are thought to be more effective in preventing certain related cancers such as liver and colorectal while both green and black tea may protect against cardiovascular disease.

Numerous recent epidemiological studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of green tea consumption on the incidence of human cancers. These studies suggest significant protective effects of green tea against oral, pharyngeal, esophageal, prostate, digestive, urinary tract, pancreatic, bladder, skin, lung, colon, breast, and liver cancers, and lower risk for cancer metastasis and recurrence.

Other studies have found that some teas protect against heart disease, and diabetes; encourage weight loss; lower cholesterol; and bring about mental alertness. Tea also appears to have antimicrobial qualities, protect against tooth decay and improve bone density.

Preliminary lab studies show that “a wide variety of commercial teas appear to either inactivate or kill viruses,” reports Reuters health Information. Several types of teas were tested on such viruses as herpes simplex 1 and 2 and the T1 (bacterial) virus. According to researcher Dr. Milton Shiffenbauer in New York, “iced tea or regular tea does destroy or inactivate the [herpes] virus within a few minutes.” Similar results were obtained with the T1 virus.

"There doesn’t seem to be a downside to tea,” says American Dietetic Association spokeswoman Katherine Tallmadge. “I think it’s a great alternative to coffee drinking. First, tea has less caffeine. It’s pretty well established that the compounds in tea – their flavonoids – are good for the heart and may reduce cancer.”

Nutritionists agree, any tea is good tea. Still, they prefer brewed teas over bottled to avoid the extra calories and sweeteners.

  • ·         Green tea: Made with steamed tea leaves, it has a high concentration of EGCG and has been widely studied. Green tea’s antioxidants may interfere with the growth of bladder, breast, lung, stomach, pancreatic, and colorectal cancers; prevent clogging of the arteries, burn fat, counteract oxidative stress on the brain, reduce risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, reduce risk of stroke, and improve cholesterol levels.
  • ·         Black tea: Made with oxidised tea leaves, black tea has the highest caffeine content and forms the basis for flavored teas like chai, along with some instant teas. Studies have shown that black tea may protect lungs from damage caused by exposure to cigarette smoke. It also may reduce the risk of stroke.
  • ·         White tea: Uncured and lightly processed. One study showed that white tea has the most potent anticancer properties compared to more processed teas.
  • ·         Oolong tea: In studies, those given antioxidants from oolong tea were found to have lower bad cholesterol levels.
  • ·         Pu-erh tea: Made from fermented and aged leaves. Its leaves are pressed into cakes. Studies have shown that Pu-erh helped with weight loss and reduced LDL cholesterol.

It is a part of our nature, here at Chill Out, to want to try something new from time to time and when talking about food and beverages a person can easily get bored with eating the same meals again and again.  Not to fear!  There is a whole world of flavor for you to explore out there.  Trying new things and different cuisines is an ideal way to expand your pallet. But the question that arises for many aspiring-foodies is what to try?  Something sweet is always an option and familiar tastes are always welcome, but perhaps with a twist or brought together in a different combination creating a new taste.  Ischler is a perfect example of this food-phenomenon.

Living in Red Deer Alberta, one can find all kinds of different ethnic foods and meals to sample. However when trying to find quality desserts and sweets in the city it can be a very difficult task. When we talk about quality desserts, Ischler immediately comes in mind. Ischler is a type of cookie dating back to the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The cookie was first made for the Emperor Franz Joseph I, in the town of Bad Ischl in 1849.  Soon after that, it became very popular.  In fact people loved it so much that it became one of the most popular cookies in the Austrian-Hungarian lands.

These cookies are still very popular and if you are living in Red Deer you are very lucky, because now they are available at Chill Out Café and Bakery. The Ischler's ingredients include butter, egg yolks, powdered sugar, dark chocolate and flour of course like many cakes and cookies these ingredients are sometimes adjusted to find new and fun ways to bring out new flavors in this delightful sweet treat. It's not compulsory for an Ischler to be chocolate it can instead be composed of different flavors. This cookie's center is filled with chocolate or they are dipped into it, either way, the Ischler is very delicious.

For many special occasions in Austrian and Hungarian households a plate of Ischler is present to entertain the guests and people enjoy these cookies a lot. These desserts are very famous among many Europeans. Ischler is a treat that you can never have enough of. It is fun to make, one needs to just mix all the ingredients according to the given instructions and bake them at 350 degrees Farenheit for around 12 to 15 minutes and the dough can be designed into different shapes, as preferred by the baker. When the dough is baked it can be filled with jam also, which gives it a different and delightful taste.

Now that Ischler is available at Chill Out Café and Bakery in Red Deer we would suggest that you come and give it a try, let its mesmerizing taste leave your mouth filled with joy. We predict you would surely fill a plate and offer it to your guests at your next occasion.

What It Takes To Make Fresh Food

Master Chill Out cafe and bakery Logo with emboss and white blur.png

The thing we take very seriously at Chill Out Café and Bakery is our commitment to freshness and taste!  We firmly believe that you can’t have one without the other.   For example when it comes time to add blueberries to our muffins we won’t use frozen ones because we notice the effects in the end product, frozen blueberries tend to wilt and do not burst with flavour after they have been put in the deep freeze.  That’s why the blueberries we use must be fresh not frozen, to allow for maximum taste and texture.  To keep our standards this high we feel we must take the time necessary to create goodness in our food.
Sadly, we feel our commitment to freshness and qualities has occasionally let some of our patrons down, due to the food not being quite ready or still in the kitchen when they’ve come in and for this we sincerely apologize.  Demand has been growing in our shop very quickly.  We are learning from this and have been starting our dishes even earlier to make sure they are ready for when you arrive.
The up-side to our consciousness of freshness, quality and taste is the amount of whole foods that are used in our food and the lesser amount of any chemicals and preservatives.  When we choose to cook and bake with fresh food rather than processed foods, we are doing our customers a big favor. And while “healthy pastries” may seem counterintuitive, the fact that we cook and bake without using products containing ingredients you can’t pronounce on the label means you can enjoy your baked goods as a tasty part of healthy living.
We truly hope you enjoy our food and tasty treats here at Chill Out Café and Bakery and hope that you’ll be by to visit us again soon.  Thank you for your business, as we strive to make it even tastier and more enjoyable each and every day!

Socialize, gather, exchange ideas and enjoy great food

While social networking continues to run rampant through our society, we’ve unfortunately become more and more isolated from actual human interaction.  That is why social places to gather, form connections with others and exchange ideas is such an important factor, which we need in our lives to thrive, now more than ever before.  Finding face-to-face human interaction at a cafe for instance can be a great outlet to network with others.

Here at Chill Out Cafe and Bakery in downtown Red Deer, we provide uniquely stimulating aromas, tastes, sounds, feel and sights - creating a positive environment for everyone who comes through our doors.  While hiding behind a computer or phone screen may entice our interest in communication, it fails to engage our primal senses.  At Chill Out, we activate all five with ease.

Sure, we can all survive in our little mundane routines, but are we really living?  Not hardly.  We are merely succumbing to the needs of survival and only that.  We need stimulation and an outlet to vent, gossip and just let it all out.  We need our friends to sit across from us at the coffee shop and to hear their voices, not just read what they type on a screen and reply. Each of us thrives on that unparalleled human connection.

Cozy in all types of weather

We offer a lovely variety of teas, coffees, homemade pastries and hot meals that you can’t find elsewhere in the Red Deer area.  So, be sure to set out to spend some quality time with your friends at our shop, or come solo and chat up a potential new friend.  You won’t be disappointed in the least.

The benefits of face-to-face interaction offers us something we will never be able to find on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.  We can’t possibly hashtag our emotions or tag enough friends in a post enough to re-create the same emotions and thought provoking talk we can find with in-person interactions.

Where better to find this stimulation than in a friendly and welcoming place like a cafe? Nowhere.  Anyone who is an avid lover of a delightful mug of java, a hot cup of tea and scrumptious assortment of baked goods should look no further than Chill Out Cafe and Bakery.

Come join us at our cafe with your friends or fly solo to make some new ones.
